Brain Hurd

Brain Hurd, Founder/Vice President of Green Education Inc. and President of Hands On Solar, has been involved with solar energy, green construction, and energy efficiency for over 30 years, as a certified contractor, state building inspector, construction auditor, and teacher.

Brian has been a “green” enthusiast since his days at Florida State University where he designed, constructed and installed a solar array in 1976. Over the years he has been active in the alternative energy movement and has participated in various workshops and conferences on solar energy, energy efficiency, and “green” building technologies.

In 2006 Brian Hurd was tapped by the Division of Adult and Career Education, LAUSD to develop the Solar Electric (PV) Installer Program. This was the first such public education program in southern California. He developed and authored the Photovoltaic Installer Certification Preparation course curriculum for LAUSD which has achieved state approval. Brian also secured the endorsement of NABCEP, (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) as an approved provider for their Entry Level Certificate of Knowledge program.

Brian has been in high demand as a speaker and expert panelist. Over the past several years he has been a featured presenter at the Los Angeles Unified School District DACE fall conference, served on an expert panel of presenters at the “Green Industries Jobs Forum” at Loyola Marymount University, spoke on Solar Energy at the S. California CAROCP conference at Cerritos College, was a presenter and panelist at the “Global Warming Forum” at California State University, L.A., & spoke at US Congresswoman Hilda Solis’ “Green Jobs Act” press conference. He also spoke on solar education at the American Solar Energy Society’s Solar 2008 Conference & Expo in San Diego.

In 2007 Brian Hurd started “Hands On Solar, Inc.” an educational services company, to partner with his nonprofit, Green Education Group, to further the cause of clean energy education. Through collaboration with the Interstate Renewable Energy Council, IREC, & the US Department of Labor, and Advanced Transportation Technology & Energy (ATT&E), Brian has conducted numerous training events at schools and colleges around the state on how to start effective programs in Photovoltaics and energy efficiency. These events are ongoing.

Stories on Brian’s program at ELASC have appear in the Wall Street Journal, the LA Times, Green Technologies Magazine, New American Media, and Renewable Energy World. The PV program has also been featured on ABC’s Good Morning America, CNN and on Los Angeles T.V. to include: CBS, ABC, and NBC affiliates.

Brian received the “Outstanding Career & Technical Instructor Award”, LAUSD/ CAROCP, for his work at East Los Angeles Skills Center, where he taught to packed classrooms of future solar installers, site analyst, system designers, energy auditors, contractors and inspectors.
